John Brown Maver accomplished much in his short life, but perhaps his proudest achievement was the large family he raised in his new adopted land.
John was born in the midst of a very hard time for his family. He was the youngest of four children (preceded by William, Thomas and Elizabeth) born to James Maver and Mary Marshall. His father James had worked his way up from his humble origin as a weavers' son to become a master silk dyer with his own business at 24 Clerk Street in Edinburgh.
